Last November, Manchester heavy-pop outfit WU LYF abruptly called it quits. While his bandmates carried on as Los Porcos, frontman Ellery James Roberts returns today with his debut solo single, “Kerou’s Lament”.

Featuring samples of Clams Casino, Lil B’s “I Am God”, and Daniel Pinchbeck’s “Planetary Initiation” (“all samples used with love & no permission,” he writes on Tumblr), Roberts has moved away from the sweeping hard-rock of WU LYF to more intricate and organic electronic compositions. But amid the flutter of vocal samples and random bits of instrumentation, Roberts’ hoarse and gravelly moan tears through the landscape, serving as both a profound musical tool and a wrenching link to the past.
